Port Authority 1.0 in the works

Hi all,

I've been away from the list for some time--just working on various
projects, including a short-lived attempt to release a shareware program
that will be open-sourced on its next release. I'm now working on
version 1.0 of Port Authority, and I wanted to give everyone an update
on what to expect:

1. PA 1.0 will be a universal binary. That's less important for the
underlying DarwinPorts bits, but important for the end user. I've gotten
the critical binary components of Port Authority (Tcl/Tk and the Tile
extension) built as universal binaries, so PA will automatically benefit.

2. I'm working on revising the interface and removing some of the OS
X-specific bits (especially those that are difficult to convert to the
universal binary format). I'll also be updating the documentation to fit
the new interface.

3. I'd like to create a portfile for PA so it can be
installed/downloaded/updated from DarwinPorts. I've done enough
hacking/building of Tcl/Tk from source that I don't think this will be
too difficult. PA also has some dependencies that will require
additional portfiles (tklib, tile, BWidgets). One of my goals here is
personal: to make PA portable enough to run as either an Aqua app or an
X11 app. I'll probably have some questions later about the particulars
of specific portfiles, and how to handle variants, but that will come
later.

So, there won't be much in the way of new features in Port Authority
1.0, but it seems pretty feature complete from a user standpoint (at
least I haven't gotten many feature requests recently). These changes,
however, will make it easier to update, more portable, and will also
benefit DarwinPorts itself by having more Tcl/Tk ports available.

Cheers, Kevin

I'm curious...which bits are hard to make universal?  It should be a
straightforward process....
