Intent to implement WebKit for Windows ports

Olmstead, Don-2

Hi WebKittens,

We over at Sony have been committing more resources to WebKit, from revitalizing the WinCairo port, rebooting the cURL network backend, and continued work on the PAL layer. We've had some developers looking at the possibility to move WinCairo from WebKitLegacy over to WebKit and they've made good progress so we'd like to begin contribution of a Windows implementation of WebKit. If landed we would enable this path for WinCairo and continue its development.

We wanted to start the discussion of adding back a Windows implementation before going any further with the work. We have a tracking bug for the work at https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=174003

Hi Don!

I will just add that there are some WebKitGTK+ users who would love for WebKitGTK+ to be supported on Windows once again. Evolution and GnuCash come to mind. Having a working WinCairo port of modern WebKit would be a huge step towards that. Although Igalia does not intend to maintain Windows code, we would certainly welcome this change in direction for the WinCairo port.

Michael

Indeed! Having a Windows port that uses WebKit2^H would indeed be a big help
in bringing modern WebKitGTK+ versions to Windows.

Apart from the applications that Michael mentions, I can also think about the
help browser in The GIMP, Pidgin [1], and also any C# application which uses
GTK+/WebKit-Sharp or Mono.WebBrowser.

Cheers,
